Architectural Grandeur
This impressive architectural build was a response to the owner’s desire to have a multi-generational family Bach for two families on Orewa beach.
The existing humble Bach had provided beachside enjoyment for decades but it had become too small to accommodate the growing families. The new concept was to provide two separate family homes, built as one, either side of a central atrium for the two sides of the family to come together. With 9 bathrooms and 11 bedrooms, communal courtyard atrium, quadruple garaging with 2 bedroom guest self-contained accommodation above, this distinctive house delivers on that brief.
This was a very technical build starting with an extensive excavation and compacted backfilling to provide for a solid foundation to minimise potential liquefaction from the beachside location. The structure was an extensive 52 part structural steel skeleton with a very specific paint specification to protect against the salt laden air in a very high wind zone. Timber frame infill panels and timber frame interior walls completed the bones of this build.
To withstand the harsh beach environment, vertical cedar, 32mm thick, was specified as the cladding. Specially imported Purple Heart vertical posts carry the laser cut, automated privacy window and deck screens. Imported solid stone patios to the front and rear patios and atrium courtyard complete the form of the outer envelope.
The interior is lined with a narrow profiled vertical cedar to the walls and ceilings, providing comfort and warm ambience for the family to enjoy the beach lifestyle all year round.
Each room benefits from ducted heating and cooling delivered by a discreet air conditioning system. Each side of the home is finished individually with kitchens and bathrooms and décor designed for each owners’ personal requirements. This house was what we refer to as a Craftsman build – a large team of qualified carpenters, including boat builders were bought together to deliver a bespoke home of exceptional timeless quality.
